Doordarshan, India’s public broadcasting service, has changed the logo colour of its news channel, DD News.
DD News introduced a new logo on April 16, 2024, replacing the previous red one. The announcement was made on their official social media handles. However, some people criticised the change in the logo’s colour, sparking a debate over whether it was “orange” or “saffron”, as per reports.
The news channel said, “While our values remain the same, we are now available in a new avatar. Get ready for a news journey like never before…Experience the all-new DD News. We have the courage to put: Accuracy over speed, facts over claims, truth over sensationalism. Because if it is on DD News, it is the truth.”
Over time, Doordarshan has updated its logo colours to blue, yellow, and red, but the design featuring two petals and a central globe has stayed consistent.
Doordarshan began as a small experiment in public service telecasting on September 15, 1959. It officially began its service in 1965 by transmitting signals to televisions in and around New Delhi. By 1972, it expanded its services to Mumbai and Amritsar, and by 1975, it reached seven other cities. Initially, it was under All India Radio (AIR). On April 1, 1976, it transited to become a separate Department in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), though still serviced by AIR, especially for its news.
Over the years, Doordarshan has expanded its reach and has grown into a network operating 36 satellite channels. It offers a free-to-air DTH service with 110 channels in its bouquet.
