The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued its response to the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) back-reference dated September 26, 2025, regarding its earlier recommendations on the “Introduction of Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) Service in Indian Telecommunication Network” made on February 23, 2024.
The CNAP feature is expected to function like a verified Caller ID system, similar to Truecaller, but will be backed and regulated by the Government of India. It aims to display the caller’s name along with their number, helping users identify callers accurately and curb spam and fraudulent calls.
The DoT had first requested TRAI’s recommendations on March 21, 2022, under Section 11(1)(a) of the TRAI Act, 1997. After extensive consultations with telecom operators and industry stakeholders, TRAI submitted its final recommendations in February 2024.
Following this, the DoT, through its back-reference, informed TRAI that the Government had reviewed the recommendations and sought reconsideration on certain aspects.
