Just after a month of Snapchat’s big loss due to Kylie Jenner’s tweet , the company has experienced loss of more than $1 Billion in its stocks because of Rihanna’s negative response to a ad that was shown Snapchat’s app. The ad was a part of Would You Rather? game on Snapchat. The choices this ad had were with options Slap Rihanna or Punch Chris Brown. Users found it offensive as Snapchat was trying to recall the famous 2009 incident when Chris Brown assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna. Below is the ad that is the cause of all this:
After getting to know this, Rihanna wrote a Instagram story which clearly shows her anger towards this ad.
“Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess!. I’d love to call it ignorance but I know you ain’t that dumb. You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it.”
the post read.
Although, Snapchat removed this ad and even apologized Rihanna in a statement saying “The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines.” but she declined this by replying “I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb!”
This incident shows the flaws in the advertising that social media networks follow and the need to improve it as people these platforms regualarly and the things that they read and watch on these platforms makes a big impact on their thought process. So, it becomes a social responsibility for these companies to not ignore such acts.
Just a few weeks ago Kylie Jenner did something similar to Snapchat because of a tweet in which she expressed her decline in interest of using the Snapchat app due to latest updates. Snapchat is working on this issue as minor mistakes has lead them to loose big valuable faith of users towards the app.
