Amazon MGM Studios has reportedly stepped away from ‘Artificial’, a film inspired by the dramatic events surrounding OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, dealing a setback to one of Hollywood’s most closely watched AI-themed projects.
According to media reports, the studio has withdrawn from the project, which was being developed by acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino. The film was expected to dramatise the leadership turmoil at OpenAI, including the brief ouster and subsequent reinstatement of Sam Altman in late 2023.
Reports suggest Amazon MGM had initially been in advanced discussions to finance and distribute the project and was considering a rapid production schedule. However, the studio is now said to have exited the film, leaving producers to seek alternative funding and distribution arrangements.
The project, titled Artificial, reportedly attracted significant attention due to both its subject matter and creative team. Guadagnino, known for films such as Call Me by Your Name and Challengers, was attached to direct, while the screenplay was written by Simon Rich.
While neither Amazon MGM nor OpenAI has publicly detailed the reasons behind the reported decision, media outlets cited concerns related to the project’s sensitivity, including its portrayal of recent events involving OpenAI and key figures in the artificial intelligence industry. The film’s close proximity to real-world events reportedly raised questions about legal, reputational and business implications. Reports also noted that OpenAI was not involved in the production.
Reports also indicate that despite Amazon MGM’s reported exit, Artificial is said to remain in development, with producers exploring options to move the project forward through other studios or financing partners. Multiple reports indicate that interest in the film remains strong given the prominence of OpenAI and the wider debate around artificial intelligence.
