The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has constituted the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG), a high-level inter-ministerial body aimed at leading India’s national strategy on artificial intelligence governance.
The move formalises key recommendations from India’s AI Governance Guidelines and the Economic Survey, which called for a unified institutional mechanism to align policy, regulation, and implementation across ministries and agencies. The AIGEG will serve as the apex body within India’s AI governance framework, driving a whole-of-government approach to ensure responsible innovation while addressing economic and labour market implications.
The group will be chaired by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, with Minister of State Jitin Prasada serving as Vice Chairperson. It will be supported by a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC), which will provide advisory inputs on emerging technologies, global developments, and regulatory challenges in the AI ecosystem.
Apart from the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, the committee includes the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the Chief Economic Adviser, and the CEO of NITI Aayog as members. It also comprises key administrative leadership, including Secretaries from the Department of Telecommunications, Department of Economic Affairs, and Department of Science & Technology, along with a representative from the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). The Secretary of MeitY will serve as the Member Convenor of the group.
This broad-based composition reflects the government’s intent to integrate perspectives from technology, economics, security, and policy domains into AI governance, ensuring coordinated decision-making and alignment with national priorities.
