TCL Acquires 51% Stakes In Sony’s Home Entertainment Venture

Sony will spin off its home entertainment business into a new joint venture, with TCL acquiring a 51% majority stake. The entity will handle end-to-end operations including product development, manufacturing, sales, and services, while continuing to market products under the Sony and BRAVIA brands, subject to regulatory approvals .

TCL Acquires 51% Stakes In Sony’s Home Entertainment Venture

Sony Corporation and TCL Electronics Holdings Limited have signed definitive agreements to form a strategic partnership in the home entertainment segment, formalising plans first outlined earlier this year.

Under the agreement, Sony will carve out its home entertainment business into a wholly owned subsidiary, which will subsequently become a joint venture with TCL holding a 51% stake and Sony retaining the other 49%. The new entity will take over end-to-end operations, including product development, manufacturing, sales, logistics, and customer service for televisions, displays, projectors, and home audio systems.

As part of the deal, Sony will transfer full ownership of its manufacturing subsidiary Sony EMCS (Malaysia) to TCL, while discussions continue regarding the potential transfer of its Shanghai-based manufacturing unit. The transaction is pending regulatory approvals, while the new company, tentatively named BRAVIA, is expected to commence operations in April 2027.

Products under the new entity will continue to carry the ‘Sony’ and ‘BRAVIA’ branding, as both companies aim to leverage their respective strengths in technology, manufacturing, and global distribution to drive growth and deliver enhanced customer value worldwide.
