OpenAI has announced that all users in India will receive free access to ChatGPT Go — the company’s entry-level paid plan for one year. The move marks the company’s latest push to deepen its footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets.
According to media reports, the offer follows OpenAI’s decision to localize its operations in India, including the recent opening of a New Delhi office and the appointment of regional leads to oversee partnerships and AI adoption. The company is reportedly aiming to boost user engagement among India’s 700 million smartphone users, many of whom use AI tools for education, productivity and content creation.
ChatGPT Go, which typically costs around $5 per month, was launched in India in August 2025 as a lighter alternative to the ChatGPT Plus subscription. The plan offers faster response times and access to GPT-4 Turbo, though without some of the premium features of the higher-tier plan.
Industry analysts have said the free access could significantly accelerate OpenAI’s user base in India, where affordability and accessibility play a major role in digital adoption. The initiative also positions OpenAI ahead of competitors like Google and Anthropic, which have been expanding their AI offerings in the region.
India has emerged as one of OpenAI’s key growth markets, with strong interest from students, startups and professionals using generative AI tools for learning and business. The company has also been testing localized features, including support for regional languages and integration with popular Indian payment systems.
The one-year complimentary access is expected to roll out to all ChatGPT users in India gradually, as OpenAI strengthens its focus on accessibility and long-term AI adoption across the country.
