Google Apologises For Putting UIDAI Number In Phones, Gets Trolled In Response

TRAI chief’s Aadhaar challenge was a disaster and created a buzz all over the internet for wrong reasons and now there’s a new thing related to this getting trending on social media.

A recent tweet about having UIDAI number in the contact list of Android phone users has caught the attention of so many people. This has made people suspicious about something wrong against their privacy.

A lot of people have @UIDAI in their contact list by default. I’m thinking aloud: What if it is only the top of the iceberg?

I really need to know now. If you have an Indian phone firmware, I’m your man, please send it to me! https://t.co/xRVNM72f1u

— Elliot Alderson (@fs0c131y) August 2, 2018

The tweet has been posted by the famous French security researcher named Baptiste Roberth having username Elliot Alderson who is known for finding flaws in well-known tech-related organisations including Oneplus, Wiko, UIDAI, Kimbho and others.

Now, Google has come up with a statement in which the company has accepted the mistake and has apologised for it. Google’s statement read as-

“Our internal review has revealed that in 2014, the then UIDAI helpline number and the 112 distress helpline number were inadvertently coded into the SetUp wizard of the Android release given to OEMs for use in India and have remained there since. Since the numbers get listed on a user’s contact list, these get transferred accordingly to the contacts on any new device.

We are sorry for any concern that this might have caused, and would like to assure everyone that this is not a situation of an unauthorised access of their Android devices. Users can manually delete the number from their devices.

We will work towards fixing this in an upcoming release of SetUp wizard which will be made available to OEMs over the next few weeks.”

This gave Twitter users a chance to troll Google:

Forgiven. Please give me a job.
