British politician of Indian origin, Rishi Sunak was elected the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 24th October. He succeeded Lizz Truss, the shortest-term holder of the Prime Minister’s office in the UK, her tenure lasting six weeks.
The first Asian-origin PM of the UK, Sunak is married to Akshata Murty, the daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, and author and educator Sudha Murthy.
About Akshata Murty
Born in Hubli, Akshata went to Baldwin Girls’ High School before studying French and Economics at Claremont McKenna College in California. She completed her Diploma in Apparel Manufacturing Technology from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Los Angeles.
She worked at Unilever and Deloitte for a while, after which she pursued her MBA from Stanford. This is where she is said to have met her husband Rishi Sunak.
Business Interests
In 2007, Murty joined Dutch cleantech firm Tendris as its marketing director, where she worked for two years, before leaving to start her own fashion firm-Akshata Designs.
Along with Rishi Sunak, she co-found the London branch of Catamaran Ventures, a venture capital fund started by her father. She is currently listed as the Director of the company.
Catamaran Ventures is a capital and private equity firm and Murty’s family office, that provides venture capital, management expertise, and network partners to local UK brands. It employs a staff of 15 in India
and has overseeing holdings worth more than $1 billion.
Through Catamaran, she has shares in two of Jamie Olivier’s restaurants- Jamie’s Italian and Jamie’s Pizzeria, Soroco, Digme Fitness, and Wendy’s.
She is the Director at Digme Fitness, a pay-as-you-go gym chain since 2017, and owns a 4.4% stake in the London-based fitness company.
The first lady of United Kingdom, has a 0.93% stake in Infosys, which is worth approximately $715 million, making her richer than British royalty.
Wealth and Net Worth
Her Infosys dividends for the tax year 2021/2022 alone amounted to £11.5m.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Akshata Murty’s total net worth is around a whopping $1.2billion
