bigbasket has elevated to the Seshu Kumar Tirumala role of Chief Operating Officer (COO), entrusting the long-serving executive with leading the company’s operations as it looks to further strengthen its quick commerce business and scale future growth.
Tirumala has been associated with bigbasket since 2014, making him one of the company’s longest-serving leaders. He joined as National Head – Buying & Merchandising and later rose to become Chief Buying and Merchandising Officer.
During his tenure, he played a key role in building the company’s merchandising, sourcing and category management functions. Under his leadership, bigbasket’s private label business expanded to account for nearly 40% of total sales, emerging as the largest private label portfolio in the Indian e-commerce sector.
He also led the development of the company’s direct farmer sourcing network, helping establish agri-infrastructure through collection centres and farm partnerships across the country.
In his new role, Tirumala will oversee operations and drive execution across the business as bigbasket continues to expand its presence in the fast-growing quick commerce segment.
Commenting on the development, Hari Menon, Founder & CEO, bigbasket, said, “Seshu has played an important role in building many of the capabilities that have shaped bigbasket’s growth over the years, from our private label business to our farmer sourcing network. His deep understanding of the business and strong track record of execution make him well suited for this role. We are pleased to see him take on this expanded responsibility.”
Seshu Kumar Tirumala, Chief Operating Officer, bigbasket, said, “Having spent more than a decade helping shape bigbasket’s sourcing and merchandising capabilities, I am excited to take on this broader role. My focus will be on strengthening the systems that power our farm-to-customer journey, enhancing execution across our operations, and ensuring we continue to deliver a seamless and dependable experience for our customers as the business grows.”
