Amitabh Kant has resigned from his role as India’s G20 Sherpa, drawing the curtain on a public service journey that spanned 45 years. A 1980-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, Kant was appointed G20 Sherpa in July 2022, months before India assumed the presidency of the intergovernmental forum.
He announced his resignation through a LinkedIn post.
Before taking charge of the G20 portfolio, Kant served as CEO of NITI Aayog from 2016 to 2022. Over the years, he led several national initiatives focused on digital governance, ease of doing business, startup ecosystems, and sustainability. His early career included key roles in tourism and industry promotion, where he was known for projects like Incredible India and Make in India.
