YouGov released a list of the world’s most admired personalities and the results are a mixed bag of expected names and new entrants
YouGov amassed open-ended nominations from panelists across 38 countries and territories. Each panelist was asked one question- “Thinking about people alive in the world today, which [man or woman] do you most admire?”.
The responses accumulated were compiled into a list of 20 men and 20 women, that were nominated in at least four countries and received the most positive responses.
In individual countries, a few more popular local figures were added to the list. Here are the results:
The Top 20 Most Admired Men
1. Barack Obama
Former President of The USA and the first Afro-American President, 60-year-old Barack Obama retained the number one spot on the list. He has been hailed as one of the greatest presidential speakers in contemporary times.
2. Bill Gates
American business mogul Bill Gates and CEO of Microsoft for a quarter of a century, Bill Gates retained his second spot on the list.
3. Xi Jinping
Chinese premier Xi Jinping retained the third spot on the list.
4. Cristiano Ronaldo
Popular footballer Ronaldo is the fifth most admired man on the YouGov list. Bought up in a difficult environment, he went on to win five Champions League titles.
5. Jackie Chan
The global icon from Hong Kong, Jackie Chan is an actor, filmmaker, martial artist, and stuntman, who is famous for his acrobatic fighting style, impeccable comic timing, and innovative stunts performed by him. He has been voted the fifth most admired man.
6. Elon Musk
Tesla honcho Elon Musk is sixth on the list
7.Lionel Messi
Forward player for Ligue 1 club Paris-Saint Germain and captain of the national team of Argentina, Lionel Messi is seventh on the list.

9. Vladimir Putin
The Russian President, Vladimir Putin is ranked 9th on the list of the World’s Most admired men.
10. Jack Ma
The Chinese businessman and co-founder of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma is tenth on the list.

The former first lady of The USA retained her top spot for the third year in succession.
2. Angelina Jolie
One of the most sought after and highest paid actresses in Hollywood, Angelina Jolie is the second most admired woman
3. Queen Elizabeth II
The longest reigning monarch in British history is the third most admired woman.
4. Oprah Winfrey
Actress, producer, and talk show host Oprah Winfrey is the fourth most admired woman on the list.
5. Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson ranked 5th in the list of most admired women.
6. Emma Watson
Activist and Woman Rights crusader Scarlett Johansson is the fifth most admired woman.
7. Taylor Swift
Singer and songwriter Taylor Swift clinched the seventh spot on the list.
8. Angela Merkel
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is eighth on the list.
9. Malala Yousafzai
