The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), on Thursday, released their much-awaited start-up ranking list, state wise. While Gujarat was on top being the best performer, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Kerala came just a notch below as top-performing states.
The state ranking system measures and compares the initiative, performance, results, and exercises undertaken by the state Government in blooming the state’s start-up ecosystem. The results were announced at an event in New Delhi. The event saw participation from top officials from different state governments and departments responsible for growing and managing the start-up ecosystems in their respective states.
According to DIPP, the states were categorized into six as mentioned below.
In an attempt to improve to improve the start-up programme state-wise, DIPP held knowledge exchange workshops in April where state representatives were taken to Silicon Valley and Israel to see their start-up programme.
The Startup India initiative, taken by the UPA Government witness’s good backing by DIPP. The whole initiate taken to rank states according to the rules laid down by DIPP in February 2018 was to help states. This ranking scheme tests different parameters, and according to the score in each parameter, each state can devise special plans to make sure that the state’s start-up ecosystem improves. The initiative looks like a grade report for the states, which comes with teacher recommendation.
At the beginning of Startup India Action Plan only 18 states had implemented start-up policy. Now that number has grown to 27 states and 3 Union Territories (UT). The agency has said that in total India has 14K start-ups are spread across 484 districts in 29 states and 7 UTs.
With this planning, DIPP believes that states can foster their respective start-up ecosystem. Without state help, it is hard for start-ups to bloom and prosper. DIPP has also asked states to implement the same ranking scheme inside the state among districts to improve the ecosystem at the district level. This will help identify the strengths and weaknesses of the start-up ecosystem at the village level.
