Zee Entertainment Enterprises has filed a lawsuit against the Reliance-Disney joint venture JioStar, alleging unauthorised use of its copyrighted music catalogue after licensing agreements between the two parties expired.
According to media reports, Zee has sought nearly $3 million in damages, claiming songs from its music division continued to be used across JioStar’s television channels and streaming platform, JioHotstar, even after agreements lapsed in 2024 and 2025.
The lawsuit, filed in a New Delhi court on April 14, 2026, adds another chapter to the growing legal friction between Zee and the Reliance-led media giant formed through the $8.5 billion merger of Reliance and Disney’s India businesses in 2024.
Media reports suggest that in its 1,800-page filing, Zee alleged that its music catalogue was used at least 50 times after licensing deals expired and were not renewed due to disagreements over commercial terms. The company argued that the continued usage amounted to copyright infringement and sought directions to halt any ongoing exploitation of its works.
JioStar, however, has denied wrongdoing. Court papers cited by Reuters show the company told Zee it had taken “extensive steps” to remove infringing content, including older programming, while arguing that residual archival hosting did not constitute unlawful use. It also reportedly rejected Zee’s damages demand but expressed willingness to find an “amicable and commercially sensible solution.”
The Delhi High Court has now referred the matter to mediation and directed JioStar to ensure there is no continued infringement while proceedings are underway. The next hearing is scheduled for July 23, 2026.
