Ted Turner, the pioneering media entrepreneur who launched CNN and transformed global television news, has died at the age of 87. According to CNN, Turner passed away on Tuesday at his home in Atlanta. The report stated that he was surrounded by family and loved ones at the time of his death.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern broadcasting, Turner changed the news industry forever when he launched CNN in 1980 as the world’s first 24-hour cable news network. The move redefined how breaking news was consumed globally and established cable news as a dominant media format.
Beyond CNN, Turner also built a vast media empire through Turner Broadcasting and played a major role in expanding cable television in the United States. He was also known for his interests in sports, environmental causes and philanthropy.
Turner had publicly revealed in 2018 that he was living with Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disorder. Over the decades, he remained one of the most recognisable and disruptive figures in the global media business.
