At the AI Impact Summit in Delhi, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has praised India’s rapid progress in sovereign AI and has said the country is well-positioned to lead in the field.
Speaking at the summit, Altman has said, “India, the world’s largest democracy, is well-positioned to lead in AI, not just to build it, but to shape it and decide what our future is going to look like.” He has also noted that more than 100 million Indians use ChatGPT weekly, with students accounting for nearly one-third of that user base.
Altman has issued a striking prediction, stating, “By the end of 2028, more of the world’s intellectual capacity could reside inside of data centers than outside of them.” He has warned that superintelligence could soon outperform CEOs and scientists, and has suggested the need for a global governance mechanism similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
He has further advocated for the democratisation of AI, cautioning that without broad access and shared oversight, the technology could lead to “centralized ruin” and “effective totalitarianism.”
