In a move that links fan engagement directly with talent development, ZEEL has announced that 15% of Zee 5’s football-related subscription revenues will be earmarked for building the sport’s ecosystem in India. The company said the initiative aims to identify, train and nurture young football talent across the country, with an ambitious long-term vision of helping India field competitive men’s and women’s teams at the FIFA World Cup by 2034.
The announcement marks a significant shift in the streaming platform’s football strategy, transforming subscribers into contributors to the sport’s growth. Every Zee 5 user who subscribes to football content will effectively participate in funding grassroots initiatives, including talent identification programmes, structured coaching and league development.
ZEEL said the funds generated through the revenue-sharing mechanism will be used to create a future talent pipeline through scalable league formats at the city, district, state and national levels. The company also plans to onboard renowned football experts and collaborate with international football federations, as well as national and state associations, to strengthen pathways for aspiring players.
The initiative builds on Zee’s recently announced partnership with FIFA through 2034, which the company believes can provide the framework needed to accelerate football development in India. Drawing from FIFA’s global expertise in talent discovery, coaching and league-building, ZEEL said it intends to establish a more robust and inclusive football ecosystem in the country.
The company said its broader objective is to make football a viable career choice for Indian youth while strengthening the foundations of the sport nationwide. By tying subscription revenues to grassroots investment, ZEEL is betting that consumer participation can help bridge the gap between fandom and infrastructure, potentially reshaping India’s football journey over the next decade.
Speaking about this decision, Punit Goenka, Chief Executive Officer, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, said, “India has a large, untapped reserve of football talent that harbors immense potential to compete at a global stage. As a responsible industry stakeholder and the home of football in India, it is our commitment to build a sustainable and conducive environment that nurtures the development of football in a holistic manner.”
He further added, “Through this initiative, we are enabling our football viewers to invest in the dreams of countless young Indians who aspire to play the beautiful game at a global stage. Our efforts aim to blend passion with opportunity and translate engagement into impact. With this initiative, we envision India firmly on the global football map, led by our future generations.”
