India has been revered as the land of learning. With the oldest university said to have originated in India, even today, the educational institutions in our country, are doing a commendable job continuously preparing students and citizens for tomorrow.
And in order to measure higher educational institutions’ performances on social and environmental sustainability, QS is out with a first-of-its-kind report- The QS Sustainability Rankings 2023.
This report measured the institution’s ability to tackle the world’s greatest environmental, social and governance challenges. It scored 700 universities governed on the basis of indicators that were designed to measure the same.
Indicators were split into environmental sustainability measures like sustainable institutions, sustainable education, sustainable research, and social impact measures that include equality, knowledge exchange, educational impact, employability and opportunities, and quality of life.
Here is a list of all the Indian institutions along with a few of their scores.
1. Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay
The institution’s overall rank is between 281-300, with a score of 33.6 as a sustainable institution and a life quality score of 17.9
It is the highest-ranked university in India.
2. Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
With its overall ranking falling in the range of 321-340, its equality score comes to 13.4 and its sustainable education score comes to 34.3
3. Jawaharlal Nehru University
The overall rank is between 361-380 and its score as a sustainable institution is 47.8.
4. University of Delhi
The institution’s overall rank is between 381-400, with a score of 57.2 on sustainable education.
5. Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
Its Sustainable Research score is 8.7 and its overall rank is between 451-500.
6. Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee
The fourth IIT on the list, the institution has an overall ranking between 451-500. And has a score of 59.8 on employability and opportunities.
7. Aligarh Muslim University
AMU in Uttar Pradesh is the seventh Indian university to be featured on the list, with an overall ranking of 501-550. 9.7 is its score on the Impact of education criteria.
8. Jadavpur University
The Jadavpur University (JU), situated in Kolkata, West Bengal, is the only state-run university to feature on the list.
Its ranking falls in the range of 501-550.
9. Vellore Institute of Technology
With a knowledge-exchange score of 60 and an overall ranking between 501-550, this private university is ninth on the list.
10. Indian Institute of Science
The overall rank of the institute is between 551-600.
Other institutes to feature on the list are the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur, Banaras Hindu University, BITS Pilani, IIT-Guwahati, and IIT-Madras.
Globally, the institutes and universities in the United States have dominated the ranking list with as many as 135 ranked universities, followed by the United Kingdom with 67 universities.
