Snap has unveiled SPECS, a new generation of augmented reality glasses designed to bring spatial computing into a lightweight, standalone wearable form factor. Available for pre-order at $2,195 with a refundable $200 deposit, the glasses are expected to begin shipping this fall in the United States, United Kingdom and France.
The launch marks a major milestone in Snap’s decade-long investment in augmented reality technologies, spanning developer tools, operating systems, optics, displays and computer vision. Positioned between AI-powered smart glasses and traditional mixed-reality headsets, SPECS aim to deliver immersive AR experiences without the bulk, external hardware or tethered connections associated with existing devices.
Built from Swiss TR90 polymer, the glasses weigh as little as 132 grams and feature Snap’s proprietary liquid crystal on silicon display technology, offering a 51-degree field of view and support for 16 million colours. Powered by dual Snapdragon processors, SPECS enable advanced hand tracking, low-latency interactions and contextual AR experiences, ranging from navigation and productivity tools to entertainment and educational applications.
The company said the device offers up to four hours of mixed-use battery life on a single charge, while the accompanying charging case extends usage to up to 20 hours. Snap also introduced a series of new developer tools, including agentic development capabilities in Lens Studio, a Spatial Benchmark for evaluating AI performance in real-world environments, and a Native Development Kit to support custom applications.
Emphasising privacy, Snap said SPECS are designed with on-device processing, clear consent mechanisms and recording indicators, giving users greater control over how their data is stored and shared. Alongside the launch, the company unveiled a global campaign featuring creative personalities including Jimmy Butler, Imogen Heap, Hoyeon, Jack Harlow and Kaia Gerber, who have collaborated with Snap on new SPECS experiences set to debut later this year.
“SPECS are the beginning of a new era in computing,” said Evan Spiegel, co-founder and CEO of Snap Inc. “For decades, computers have asked us to look down, sit still, or step out of the moment. SPECS bring computing into the world around us where we live, work, learn, create, and connect.”
“The smartphone put our lives in our pockets. SPECS put computing into the world, where life actually happens. SPECS are not designed to replace the world. They’re designed to bring computing into it. SPECS are the most capable and most wearable AR glasses ever built,” Spiegel added.
He also noted, “With SPECS, AI is not intelligence trapped in a chat box,” Spiegel said. “It is intelligence that can see what you see, understand what you’re trying to do, and help you in the moment.” “SPECS only work if people trust them. Privacy has to be built in from the very beginning. Together, we will create something truly special. A future where computing empowers us, brings us closer together, and reconnects us with the world around us.”
