Netflix has begun rolling out a new sign-in policy that requires each non-child profile under a subscription to be linked to a unique email address, marking another significant change to how users access shared accounts. As per media reports, the update started rolling out on June 15 and has been confirmed by a Netflix spokesperson as a permanent change.
Previously, a single email address and password could be used to manage up to five profiles on a Netflix account. Under the new system, users are being prompted to add an individual email address to their profile to continue accessing the service. Child profiles are exempt from the requirement.
As suggested by media reports, Netflix has said the change is designed to make sign-ins easier, improve account recovery and deliver more personalised recommendations. Individual profile owners will also be able to manage their own passwords, sign-in verification, and language, audio and display settings without relying on the primary account holder.
The update, however, has sparked concerns among some subscribers, particularly those who use multiple profiles on a single device or share accounts within a household. Critics have suggested that assigning unique email addresses to each profile could allow Netflix to better identify individual users and potentially make it easier to separate profiles into individual subscriptions in the future.
While the feature is still being rolled out gradually and has not yet appeared for all users, it signals Netflix’s continued efforts to reshape account management and user authentication on its platform.
