Sadly India has been one of the biggest markets for the Swift hatchback cars in India and yet the Swift Sports model, which sells across many right-hand drive countries across the world will not be sold in India. Indian buyers account for more than 50% for all the global sales of Swift cars.
Maruti has recently confirmed that the most high-end sports model with 140PS engine will not be launched in India, not anytime soon. It’s a big disappointment for those sports enthusiasts who were eyeing the launch of this car.
What the future holds
What might come to India, that too at a later stage is Swift RS. India could get a Swift RS with a 1.0-liter petrol engine that is rated at 103 PS and 150 Nm, just like the Baleno RS. And this time because of the Made in India tag, the launch price Swift RS could be Rs 7.5 lakhs, ex-showroom.
Reason for no-show
The prime reason stated for not launching the car is that it could be expensive considering the fact that it’s just a small hatchback family car end of the day. All thanks to high import duty and GST for CBU cars, the price could have ranged anywhere between 20-25 lakhs. Within this range, a lot of high-end sedans are available in the market and also some of the premium SUVs are available on this range.
Specifications
In comparison to the regular Maruti Swift, the sports variant comes with a 1.4 liter, 4 cylinders, turbocharged petrol engine offering 140bhp power and 230 Nm torque mated to a 6-speed manual. It receives a stiffer suspension and also has visual updates.
Are you more disappointed on the sports model being not launched or a hope of Swift RS in the near future?
