How Colors Became Top Hindi General Entertainment Channel

When we analyze the viewership stats over all the mediums whether it is TV, YouTube, Streaming Apps, TikTok or social media sites, we always come to only one conclusion- There is audience for every type of content in India.

‘Yahan Sab Bikta Hai.’

According to the latest TV viewership data released by BARC India, Colors is the No. 1 Hindi General Entertainment Channel (GEC) with a viewership of 520 million impressions and has a market share of about 21%. The channel has reclaimed the top position among pay-TV Hindi GEC for the first time in the new tariff regime.

According to data released, the channel dominates all day prime time with 365M impressions and 24.8% market share. The channel has become the premier primetime destination for viewers on both weekdays and weekends and clear slot leader in 6 out of 12 all day prime time slots.

Now you might be wondering what is it which made Colors the top Hindi GEC?

Obviously, those who watch Bigg Boss know it is BigBoss, but other shows have also played a big role. Bigg Boss played a major role but not all. Fiction shows like Naagin, Choti Sardaarni, Shakti, Vidya, and Shubh Arambh also played their part.

Bigg Boss getting bigger

You might not have even watched a single episode of the Bigg Boss 13 yet, but this show is the major contributor to the viewership of the channel. The current season of Bigg Boss has reached more than 200M viewers across India across all its airing on both Colors SD and HD feed. It is the No. 1 non-fiction show in the Hindi general entertainment category. According to data, the show has grown by 63% on weekends and 59% on weekdays.

Naagin becoming India’s favourite

Those who were born in this century obviously find irrelevant to even watch such non-fiction shows, but the country’s old age audience’s obsession with ‘Naagin’ character isn’t over yet. The channel has launched the fourth season of its weekend show Naagin in the last month of 2019. The show garnered 9.6M impressions in the launch episode making it the best launch of Hindi general entertainment category 2019.

Weekdays Fiction- Choti Sardaarni, Shakti, Vidya

Weekdays fiction are the key to sustenance for any GEC. And Colors understands this very well. Channel’s weekday fiction shows Choti Sardaarni and Shakti are among the list of top 10-weekday fiction shows, while shows like Vidya and Shubh Arambh are also gaining popularity.
