Delhi HC Grants Interim Protection To Jr NTR’s Personality Rights

Telugu actor Jr NTR has thanked the Delhi High Court for safeguarding his personality rights after the court has granted an interim injunction restraining online platforms from illegally using his name or images for commercial gain. The order has aimed to prevent the misuse of the actor’s identity, including through artificial intelligence and deepfake technology.

The court has passed the interim order while hearing the actor’s plea seeking protection of his personality and publicity rights, as per media reports. Personality rights, also known as the right to publicity, have enabled individuals to safeguard, regulate and commercially benefit from the use of their name, image or likeness.

Reacting to the order, Jr NTR has expressed gratitude to the Delhi High Court and his legal team in a post on X, acknowledging the need for such protection in the digital age. He has also thanked Supreme Court advocates Dr Balajanaki Srinivasan and Dr Alka Dakar, along with Rajender and the team at Rights and Marks, for their legal support.

I thank the Hon’ble Delhi High Court for granting a protective order that safeguards my personality rights in today’s digital age.

While hearing the plea, Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora has underscored the necessity of judicial intervention in such matters, noting that the actor’s name, likeness and image constitute protectable elements of his personality rights. The court has observed that no third party can commercially exploit these rights, including through the sale of merchandise, without the actor’s consent.

In its interim order dated December 22, the court has restrained multiple defendants, including 17 entities, John Doe persons and websites, from exploiting Jr NTR’s personality until the next date of hearing. The court has also noted that the actor is a widely recognised public figure who has built significant goodwill, reputation and celebrity status over the years.

The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on May 19, 2026.
