Unsurprisingly, leading the pack is Mukesh Ambani, a name synonymous with wealth and influence tops the list.

The prestigious Forbes’ 2023 World’s Billionaires list features a record-breaking number of 169 Indians, showcasing their remarkable success in accumulating vast fortunes.

In a land of vast opportunities and economic growth, India is home to some of the wealthiest individuals who have amassed incredible fortunes. From visionary entrepreneurs to business tycoons, their fortunes serve as a testament to their hard work, determination, and entrepreneurial prowess.

Here, we present to you the wealthiest individuals in India, based on Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires rankings, a testament to their extraordinary achievements and the thriving entrepreneurial spirit of the nation.

Top 10 richest people in India in 2023

1. Mukesh Ambani

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, is India’s wealthiest individual with a net worth of $92.3 billion. Reliance Industries, with over Rs 8 lakh crore ($104 billion) in revenue, operates in diverse sectors including petrochemicals, oil and gas, retail, and telecom.

2. Gautam Adani

Gautam Adani, an Indian billionaire, founded and leads the Adani Group, a multinational conglomerate involved in ports, power generation, airports, and green energy. His wife, Priti Adani, chairs the Adani Foundation. Adani is India’s largest airport operator and controls Gujarat’s Mundra Port, the country’s largest, with a net worth of $53.6 billion.

3. Cyrus Poonawalla

Cyrus Poonawalla, owner of the Serum Institute of India, has greatly benefited from the success of COVID-19 vaccines, making him one of India’s richest individuals with a net worth of $26.6 billion. Assisting him is his son Adar in managing the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer headquartered in Pune.

4. Shiv Nadar

Shiv Nadar, owner of HCL, is a renowned IT industry contributor and Padma Bhushan recipient. HCL serves clients like Cisco, Microsoft, and Boeing. Nadar is also a respected philanthropist, donating Rs 1,161 crore in 2022 with a net worth of $26.2 billion.

5. Savitri Jindal & family

Savitri Jindal, an Indian politician and entrepreneur, is the emeritus chair of the O.P. Jindal Group. Her four sons oversee different divisions of the business. The JSW Group, including JSW Sports, operates worldwide to strengthen India’s sports ecosystem. Savitri Jindal has a net worth of $18.4 billion.

6. Radhakishan Shivkishan Damani

Radhakishan Shivkishan Damani, a notable Indian entrepreneur and investor, is the creator of Avenue Supermarts Limited, operating over 200 DMart stores in India. He maintains control over his investments through Bright Star Investments Limited, with a net worth of $18.3 billion.

7. Lakshmi Mittal

Lakshmi Mittal, Chairman of ArcelorMittal, acquired Essar Steel in 2019 for $5.9 billion. He later handed the CEO role to his son Aditya Mittal in 2021. ArcelorMittal halted production at its $16.9 billion Kryvyi Rih facility due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

8. Dilip Shanghvi

Dilip Shanghvi, a leading Indian business tycoon, founded Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, the first Indian pharma company valued at $5 billion. He grew the company through strategic acquisitions, notably acquiring Ranbaxy Laboratories in 2014 for $4 billion. With a net worth of $16.3 billion, Shanghvi ranks among the wealthiest individuals.

9. Kumar Birla

Kumar Birla, a prominent figure in commodities, leads the Aditya Birla Group, which operates in aluminium, cement, and financial services. He resigned as non-executive chairman of Vodafone Idea due to mounting debts in 2021. Currently, he serves as a non-executive director with a net worth of $15.2 billion.

10. Uday Kotak

Uday Kotak, the Founder and Managing Director of Kotak Mahindra Group, chose to reduce his stake in the bank in 2020 to enhance regulatory flexibility and compliance. He has been preparing his son, Jay Kotak, to assume a leadership position within the organization. Uday Kotak’s net worth stands at $13.9 billion.

Mother Dairy is targeting a 20% increase in revenue to over Rs 24,000 crore in FY27, backed by rising consumer demand and plans to expand into new markets, according to media reports. As per media reports, the dairy major recorded a turnover of Rs 20,300 crore in FY26, up 17% year-on-year. The company has more than doubled its revenue over the last five years, crossing the Rs 20,000-crore milestone. As part of its growth strategy, Mother Dairy is looking to strengthen its presence outside Delhi-NCR. Chairman Meenesh Shah said the company is exploring entry into new markets where it currently has limited or no presence. The company is also setting up a dairy plant in Maharashtra, has leased a facility in Hyderabad, and is establishing a second plant in Bihar. Managing Director Jayateertha Chary said sales in the first two months of the fiscal have been encouraging, with ice cream emerging as a strong-performing category. Reports also suggest that from Mother Dairy’s FY26 turnover, the dairy business contributed more than Rs 15,000 crore, while edible oils and horticulture accounted for around Rs 5,000 crore. Around 63% of revenue came from Delhi-NCR, with the remainder generated from other parts of the country. The company currently reaches more than 95 cities across India and operates nine milk processing plants, four horticulture processing plants and 16 associated edible oil facilities.
