The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) in Darjeeling has directed Amazon and a camera seller to pay Rs 4.68 lakh to a customer in a consumer dispute involving a camera purchased through the e-commerce platform.
As per media reports, the commission held both Amazon and the seller liable for deficiency in service and unfair trade practices, granting relief to the consumer after finding merit in the complaint. The order adds to a growing number of rulings in which consumer forums have held e-commerce platforms accountable alongside third-party sellers for transactions conducted through their marketplaces.
The dispute arose after the customer purchased a camera through Amazon and subsequently approached the consumer commission alleging deficiencies related to the transaction. After examining the facts of the case, the commission directed Amazon and the seller to jointly compensate the consumer, with the total award amounting to Rs 4.68 lakh.
Reports also suggest that the ruling reiterates the responsibility of online marketplaces to ensure that consumers receive products and services as represented on their platforms. Consumer forums across India have increasingly emphasised that e-commerce intermediaries cannot entirely distance themselves from disputes arising from transactions facilitated through their marketplaces.
