Actor Preity Zinta has received permission from the Bombay High Court to initiate legal proceedings against Google, Meta and several other entities over the alleged misuse of her identity through AI-generated content, according to media reports.
As per media reports, the court has allowed Zinta to file a civil suit seeking injunctions and damages over alleged deepfake videos, manipulated images, memes, chatbot personas and other digital content created using her likeness without authorisation.
In her plea, Zinta has alleged that various platforms and websites created, uploaded and circulated AI-generated content that misappropriated her identity and public persona. She has argued that the alleged actions amount to violations of her personality rights, copyright and moral rights, while also causing damage to her reputation and goodwill.
The Bombay High Court granted leave under Clause XII, enabling the actor to institute substantive proceedings before the court. Reports indicate that the lawsuit names Google LLC, Meta platforms and several other entities connected to the creation or dissemination of the disputed content.
The matter is expected to be closely watched as Indian courts continue to shape the legal framework around AI-generated content and personality rights in the digital era.
