‘Stars do shine but the night is dark without the moon.’ Thomso, the annual cultural festival of IIT Roorkee is that moon of the sky. Although several college fests are organized across the country over the year the grandeur of Thomso is majestic. Thomso, a much-celebrated package of art, culture, expression with an overflow of excitement and energy, highlights IIT Roorkee’s cultural depth and ignites pride in its heritage and legacy. It nurtures the defining climate for cultural rejuvenation among the students who are in their formative years of creativity. Interestingly, it is continuously evolving since its inception in 1982 in terms of quality. Addition of innovative and diverse events along with broadening of its reach further adds to this evolution.
The heart of the fest is its theme- the central idea around which the fest revolves. For Thomso’18 the theme is ‘Seized By Stardust’ which rejoices the fascinations of the starry sky. As one may feel that gazing upon the stars, one loses himself in the bliss of silence and the peace of night. It’s the starry sky which can calm even the most furious. A simple activity as laying under the noir blanket of sky and witnessing the twinkling of the pellet-like stars, twirling some millions of light years away, in their own stardust, can awe us all. And in the same spirit, we decided to take up this theme for the fest.
With sparkling aspirations, sterling accomplishments and bubbling enthusiasm, Thomso is a hub of the young and creative minds across the nation and receives a footfall of over 50,000 from over 800 colleges across the length and breadth of the country. The charm and splendor of Thomso has been winning hearts for more than 35 years now. Started back in 1982 by the students of University of Roorkee, it has played host to a multitude of talented scholars and media moguls in an annual celebration of culture and intellect.
The eye candy of the whole fest are its pronites. Thomso has been graced by several celebrities in the past such as Sunidhi Chauhan, DJ Marnik, DJ Nucleya, Nikhil D’Souza, Shaan, Farhan Akhtar, Sonu Nigam, KK, Kailash Kher, Sushmita Sen etc.
Thomso organises over 150 events in a span of 3 days covering every topic under the sun from Dance to Literature, Music to Technology, Fashion to Entrepreneurship, Fine arts to Computer Gaming, Cinema to Showbiz and what not. The majestic grandeur of this three-day cultural extravaganza unlocks a spectrum full of infinite possibilities for the creative folks and talented personnel. The winners of all these competitions are offered prizes worth Rs. 30 Lakhs as a whole. The major center stage events under various genres are-

The major attractions from the days of Thomso was the Carnival. It exhilarates fanatics with euphoria and ecstasy. With events ranging from Paintball to Body Zorbing, Human foosball to dodgeball, magic shows to boulevard games, Carnival has it all. Another addition to the fest is Silent DJ, the showstopper of Thomso for the whole of 3 days which surely leaves everyone with a whole lot of memories. Another event that made the nightlife exuberant was Nightlife Cafe that grabbed mass attention after the pronites. The euphoria that surrounded the ecstatic days and charismatic nights of Thomso is treasured in everyone’s hearts.
Expanding its horizons to reach out to a wider audience, Thomso organised zonals for the very first time in 2017. And carrying on this trend in 2018, Thomso carried out its talent hunt in Jaipur, Delhi, Bhopal and Lucknow. The zonals are competitions that provide opportunities to participants directly get into the finals of highly diverse and competitive events at Thomso. The overwhelming participation in the zonal events has encouraged us to cover more cities in the next edition of the fest.
‘We rise by lifting others’, Thomso truly abides by these words of Robert Ingersoll, extending its helping hands to bring about a change in society. Thomso proudly announces its association with the following NGOs -Teach For India, Kailash Satyarthi Children Foundation and Sofia educational and welfare society. The essence of giving lies in the very being of Thomso cherishing the joy of being a supportive force to a social cause.
So if the magnificence and splendor of Thomso captivated you, do give us a visit this October and experience the most magical three days of your life.
