Platforms Like TikTok, Vigo Video May Get Banned Soon. Here’s Why

| Published on February 15, 2019

Launched in 2016 and originally called Musically, there is no doubt that TikTok is one of the most popular apps today. The thing about content on TikTok is users are getting addicted and are unaware of its consequences. The fact that videos made on tikTok are getting popular on other platforms like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube are making experts a bit worried.

To have an eye on the situation, content moderators have been hired the government for inappropriate online content like nudity, gore, violence, spams, disturbing videos, dangerous hoaxes and other extreme content on social networking sites, video platforms and e-commerce sites.

The tricky thing about Chinese apps is that they have a set of their own guidelines. The operating companies are under the jurisdiction of China and they comply with China’s laws and regulations of the cyberspace administration and the Chinese Internet. But these laws should be modified according to India’s needs and that’s what authorities are demanding. If these companies don’t do the changes, there is a big chance to get banned in India.

Tamil Nadu IT Minister M Manikandan is serious about the issue. On Tuesday, the minister said in the state Assembly that the Tamil Nadu government will approach the Centre to ban TikTok. This comes after Nagapattinam MLA Thamimun Ansari from the AIADMK raised the issue and said that the app is “damaging” to the Indian culture. Manikandan ensured that he will appeal for a ban on TikTok the same way the Blue Whale challenge was “tackled”.

He said that many parents and activists have already approached him telling that the Tik Tok is leading to a “serious crisis in culture.”

Congress national spokesperson Khushbu disagreed with the move and said that Tik Tok is an app that is used by the people for personal use. People personally upload their own videos.

“If you have a problem with that, don’t watch it. If you ban everything on the basis of whether or not it matches with your values, nothing will be left out… If this app deserves some regulations, we can frame rules and do that instead of banning it.” she said
