Advertising veteran Piyush Pandey has been posthumously conferred with the Padma Bhushan at the Civil Investiture Ceremony-I held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 25. Widely regarded as one of the architects of modern Indian advertising, Pandey has been honoured with India’s third-highest civilian award for his contribution to advertising, communication and nation-building campaigns. The award presented by Droupadi Murmu has been received by his wife, Neeta Joshi.
The government citation has described Pandey as a transformative figure whose influence has extended beyond creative storytelling to strategic leadership, industry-building and shaping communication rooted in India’s cultural identity.
Pandey had previously been awarded the Padma Shri in 2016. His achievements had also earned him global recognition. In 2004, he had become the first Asian to serve as jury president at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. He had later received the CLIO Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
Pandey had begun his advertising career in 1982 with Ogilvy India, then known as Ogilvy & Mather India, joining as a trainee account executive before moving into the creative function. Often referred to as the “voice of Indian advertising”, he had redefined how brands engaged with Indian consumers through simple, relatable and emotionally resonant campaigns that became part of popular culture.
Pandey had passed away on October 24, 2025, at the age of 70. Family members had said he had been battling pneumonia for several weeks following a trip, after which his condition had deteriorated.
