OpenAI has unveiled a significant update to ChatGPT, turning it into a versatile app platform by integrating third-party applications directly into the chat interface. This development, announced at OpenAI’s annual DevDay conference, marks a major step in enhancing the capabilities of its AI chatbot.
The newly introduced Apps SDK allows developers to embed their applications seamlessly within ChatGPT, enabling users to interact with services like Spotify, Canva, Figma, and Zillow through natural language commands. For instance, users can ask ChatGPT to design a poster on Canva, create a music playlist on Spotify, or browse property listings on Zillow, all within the chat interface.
OpenAI highlighted the launch on Twitter, stating:

This integration is initially available to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the European Union, across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. OpenAI plans to expand the availability to users in the European Union in the near future.
The Apps SDK, built on OpenAI’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), provides developers with the tools to define both the functionality and interface of their applications, ensuring a smooth user experience. OpenAI has also indicated plans for monetization, allowing developers to charge for premium app features, while a dedicated app directory will help users discover and manage apps within the ChatGPT ecosystem.
The introduction of this app ecosystem positions ChatGPT as a central hub for various digital services, reducing the need for users to switch between multiple applications. By integrating popular applications into ChatGPT, OpenAI aims to enhance user convenience and expand the platform’s utility beyond traditional conversational AI.
