ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has appointed former Uber India and South Asia President, Prabhjeet Singh, as the Managing Director for its India operations, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion strategy in one of its fastest-growing markets.
As per media reports, Singh will join OpenAI in September and report to Kiran Mani. As the company’s most senior executive in India, he will oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement and business operations in the country.
The appointment underscores OpenAI’s increasing focus on India, which it has repeatedly described as one of its top-priority markets. The company opened its first office in New Delhi in late 2025 and has been deepening its engagement with enterprises, developers and policymakers amid surging adoption of generative AI tools in the country.
An alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Singh spent nearly 11 years at Uber, where he led the mobility business across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and played a key role in expanding services including Auto, Moto and Shuttle. Before joining Uber in 2015, he worked at McKinsey & Company and Lehman Brothers Holdings.
The leadership appointment comes as global AI companies intensify investments in India, driven by rapid consumer adoption, growing enterprise demand and the government’s push to build AI infrastructure and capabilities through initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission.
