Motorola has filed a civil lawsuit in India against major social media platforms and multiple content creators, alleging that posts about its smartphones are defamatory and misleading. The case, filed in a Bengaluru court, names platforms including YouTube, Instagram, and X, along with dozens of creators.
As per reports, the complaint spans over 60 pages. Motorola has sought the removal of hundreds of posts and a permanent injunction to prevent what it describes as ‘false or defamatory’ content related to its devices. The suit covers a wide range of material, including product reviews, user comments, videos, and even boycott calls circulating across platforms. The company has pointed to posts alleging device malfunctions, including claims of phones catching fire, as part of its case. However, the legal action also appears to target negative reviews and critical commentary that Motorola claims are inaccurate or damaging to its reputation.
The move has triggered concern among legal experts and industry observers, who warn that such a sweeping request could blur the line between curbing misinformation and restricting legitimate criticism. Some argue that seeking a blanket injunction across multiple posts and creators risks discouraging independent product reviews, an essential part of consumer decision-making in India’s price-sensitive smartphone market.
Media reports, however, suggest that Motorola has pushed back against these concerns, stating that the lawsuit is not intended to suppress genuine consumer feedback or fair reviews. The company clarified that its objective is to act against malicious or unverified claims, and acknowledged that some creators may have been unintentionally impacted.
