Atanu Chakraborty has stepped down from his role as Part-time Chairman and Independent Director of HDFC Bank with immediate effect. Chakraborty, who joined the Board in May 2021, played a key role during a pivotal phase for the bank, including its merger with HDFC Limited. The integration positioned HDFC Bank as the second-largest bank in India.
Following his resignation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the bank’s request to appoint Keki Mistry as interim Part-time Chairman. Mistry will assume the role effective March 19, 2026, for a period of three months.
In his resignation letter, Chakraborty quoted, “Certain happenings and practices within the bank, that I have observed over the last two years, are not in congruence with my personal Values and Ethics. This is the basis of my aforementioned decision. I confirm that there are no other material reasons for my resignation other than those stated above.”
He also expressed his sincere appreciation to the Board and senior management for their cooperation and support during his tenure, while also extending gratitude to the Independent and Non-Executive Directors for their time and contributions in shouldering key responsibilities across the Board and its committees.
Chakraborty noted that it had been a privilege to contribute to the bank’s growth and governance, and highlighted the strong energy and potential within the organisation’s middle and junior levels as a foundation for its future. He concluded by wishing the bank continued success in its future endeavours
