Kotak Mahindra Bank has announced that its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ashok Vaswani, will step down after completing his first term, with the board beginning the process of identifying his successor. The bank confirmed the development through a regulatory filing, marking the start of a planned leadership transition at one of India’s leading private sector lenders.
According to the regulatory filing, Vaswani has informed the board that he does not wish to seek reappointment after his current tenure ends on December 31, 2026. He cited personal reasons for his decision. The board has accepted his request and stated that the appointment of a new Managing Director and CEO will be completed within the applicable regulatory timelines.
Ashok Vaswani assumed the role of Managing Director and CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank in January 2024. Before joining Kotak Mahindra Bank, Ashok Vaswani served as Non Executive Director at LSEG from June 2021 to February 2024. During the same period, he was President at Pagaya from July 2022 to January 2024.
Earlier, he held multiple leadership positions at Barclays. He was Chief Digital Officer from November 2021 to July 2022 and CEO of Global Consumer and Payments from April 2019 to November 2021. Prior to that, he served as CEO of Barclays UK from March 2016 to April 2019.
His earlier roles at Barclays included CEO of Personal and Corporate Banking from May 2014 to March 2016, CEO of Retail Banking from October 2012 to April 2014, CEO of UK Retail and Business Bank from October 2011 to September 2012, CEO of Africa from September 2010 to October 2011, and CEO of Cards Europe from February 2010 to October 2010.
Before Barclays, Vaswani was a Partner at Brysam Global Partners from June 2007 to February 2010. He also spent over eight years at Citigroup, serving as CEO of Consumer Bank Asia Pacific from May 2004 to June 2007, CFO and CAO of CitiCards from July 2001 to May 2004, Marketing Director for CEMEA from November 2000 to July 2001, and Division Executive for Turkey, Middle East and Africa from June 1999 to November 2000.
Earlier, he worked as a Management Consultant at AF Ferguson from 1985 to 1987
