The move comes after multiple warnings from the Indian government on the contribution of WhatsApp in spreading fake news. Just a few days ago, IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Chris Daniels, vice-president of WhatsApp had a meeting on companies operations in India after starting a local unit in the country.

This is a crucial move as rumors circulated on social media apps have led to several problems such as online scams and even death of people.

“WhatsApp is deeply committed to India and we are excited to keep building products that help people connect and support India’s fast-growing digital economy. As a successful entrepreneur himself, Abhijit knows what it takes to build meaningful partnerships that can serve businesses across India,” Matt Idema, COO of WhatsApp, said in a statement on Wednesday.
