But with the exit of both of his co-founders in last few months, it is expected that WhatsApp will soon change its revenue model and start earning with ads. This has been revealed by an analyst from Barclays who wrote a note about this. The note read: “We’ve been told by many of our checks over the last few years that ‘once Jan leaves, that’s when the ads show up.’”

It was reported earlier that Jan Koum has left Facebook because he had disputes over ads and to what limit WhatsApp its data with Facebook. The other co-founder of WhatsApp, Brian Acton, had left Facebook and he clearly raised his voice against how Facebook operates. He even suggested users delete their Facebook accounts after the Cambridge Analytica data leak case came out. had broken out last month. Both the co-founders had joined Facebook after it acquired WhatsApp in 2014.

The exit of Acton and Koum from Facebook has cleared the path for Facebook to finally start making money from WhatsApp. “There has been a tension between the founding WhatsApp team and Facebook around the future of messaging and the pace of monetization,” the note read. It is estimated that WhatsApp and Facebook’s Messenger together will earn around $11 billion annually from ads only by 2020.

This will help Facebook to make up $19 billion that they invested in WhatsApp while acquiring it. Since its acquirement, WhatsApp’s co-founders were always concerned about sharing any data with Facebook and their resistance towards never showing any advertising on their app made them eventually leave the company.
