Is The Business World Fair To Women? Here is Vineeta Singh’s Take On It

In Conversation With Vineeta Singh, CEO and Co-Founder, SUGAR

The challenges faced by SUGAR Cosmetics were not unique to the beauty industry but echoed the broader struggle for female-led businesses to secure funding. Ms. Singh highlights the difficulty in raising capital, emphasizing that less than 3% of global capital goes to women-led businesses. SUGAR faced over 100 rejections between 2012 and 2017, reflecting the broader systemic issues women entrepreneurs encounter. Previously on Shark Tank, Vineeta mentioned how she faced rejections from more than 100 VCs, because SUGAR is co-founded by her husband, and the investors always had doubt if it would be a good idea to invest in a husband-wife-led company.

Leadership in a Changing Landscape

Vineeta Singh

Reflecting on her professional journey, Ms. Singh advocates for an empowering leadership style, irrespective of gender. She emphasizes the need for women to advocate for themselves, speaking up about their accomplishments and the value they bring to the table. According to her, leadership in the modern era requires an approach that inspires innovation and motivation across all levels of the organization.

Nurturing Ambition: Advice for Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs

Ms. Singh’s advice to budding women entrepreneurs is clear – don’t be afraid to bring your ambitions to the forefront. Despite the existing challenges, she encourages women to stand up for themselves and believe in their capabilities, even in the face of judgment.

The Role of Grit and Resilience

Drawing from her own experiences, Ms. Singh acknowledges the importance of grit and resilience in the entrepreneurial journey. Facing failures with businesses before SUGAR Cosmetics taught her invaluable lessons about bouncing back and staying strong during tough times.

Barriers to Entry: Why Female-Led Businesses Are Few

The lack of access to capital and insufficient support for women’s careers from their homes are identified as significant barriers. Ms. Singh highlights a study by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, showing that Indian women spend six times more hours on domestic chores than their male counterparts, impacting their ability to dedicate time and mental bandwidth to building startups.

Cultivating a Culture of Equality at SUGAR Cosmetics

While acknowledging progress in promoting equality and fairness in the workplace, Ms. Singh acknowledges that gender-related incidents still occur. SUGAR Cosmetics, however, is committed to fostering a culture of respect, diversity, and inclusion, with over 70% of their workforce comprising women.

Singh at the end, emphasized that meaningful change will only occur when women comprise at least 40% of the workforce and when a similar proportion of capital is invested in businesses led by women. However, achieving this milestone may still be a decade or more away.

In conclusion, Ms. Vineeta Singh‘s journey exemplifies the challenges and triumphs of women in the business world. Her insights provide a roadmap for aspiring women entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of self-belief, resilience, and fostering a culture of equality in the workplace.

As we celebrate the success of SUGAR Cosmetics, we are reminded that the path to gender equality in business is ongoing, requiring collective efforts to break down barriers and create a more inclusive future.
