OpenAI has decided to shut down its video-generation platform Sora, marking a sharp shift in its product strategy less than a year after debut. This abrupt shutdown signals a strategic pivot while also scrapping a high-value partnership with Disney.
Sora announced the shutdown via X.
The move also brings an abrupt end to a reported $1 billion partnership with The Walt Disney Company, which had been announced just months ago. As per media reports, teams from both companies had recently concluded a meeting related to Sora when the decision to discontinue the platform was communicated.
The shutdown reflects a broader recalibration within OpenAI, as it redirects focus toward core areas such as enterprise AI, developer tools, and foundational model development. The company has also been facing growing scrutiny around AI-generated video, and the significant computational resources required to scale such offerings.
While Sora had generated considerable buzz for its ability to create realistic videos from text prompts, its discontinuation underscores a more focused and pragmatic approach, as the company prioritises long-term, scalable growth areas.
