Lionsgate has sold its streaming platform, Lionsgate Play, in India and Southeast Asia to Rohit Jain, the founder who has built and scaled the service across the region over the past eight years. The company has confirmed that all other Lionsgate film and television businesses in India and Southeast Asia have remained with the studio.
The transaction has placed Lionsgate Play under independent, founder-led ownership, with Rohit Jain transitioning fully to managing the platform and exiting Lionsgate as part of the deal. As per media reports, the move has marked a structural shift limited to the streaming business, while Lionsgate’s broader studio operations in the region have continued unchanged.
Under a multi-year agreement, Lionsgate has licensed the Lionsgate Play brand name to the platform and has continued to provide access to its film and television content. This arrangement has allowed Lionsgate Play to continue operating and expanding in the South and Southeast Asian markets with access to the studio’s library.
Rohit Jain has served as President of Lionsgate Play Asia and has overseen the platform’s expansion across multiple Asian markets during his tenure. With the completion of the sale, Lionsgate Play has continued operations as an independent entity with a focus on the region’s digital entertainment audience.
“We thank Rohit for his outstanding leadership in building and scaling Lionsgate’s business in India over the past eight years,” said Lionsgate COO Brian Goldsmith. “Under his stewardship, the Lionsgate brand has gained greater resonance with audiences in South Asia and Southeast Asia, and Lionsgate Play has emerged as a distinctive premium streaming platform in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital entertainment markets. Rohit is an entrepreneur with a deep understanding of the Asia landscape, and he has the expertise and experience to lead Lionsgate Play into an exciting new phase of growth.”
“I’m deeply grateful to Jon Feltheimer and Brian Goldsmith for the trust and freedom to build Lionsgate’s India business and transform Lionsgate Play into a premium streaming platform across Asia,” said Rohit Jain. “Lionsgate Play has established itself as a leading destination for Hollywood content in India and is now positioned to expand well beyond that, shaping a differentiated, future-ready streaming platform for the region.”
