The Delhi High Court has refused to stay the release of the web series UP 77, which has reportedly been based on the life of slain gangster Vikas Dubey. Justice Sachin Datta has said the court has not been inclined to interfere with the release at this stage while hearing a plea filed by Dubey’s wife Richa.
As per media reports, the plea has sought a stay on the release of the web series, contending that it would cause trauma and harassment to the petitioner. The court has noted the submissions while considering the request for interim relief.
The court has recorded the statement of the producers that UP 77 is a work of pure fiction and has nothing to do with the life of Vikas Dubey. It has also asked the producers to issue a public statement clarifying this position.
The web series has been scheduled to release on the Waves OTT platform on December 25, 2025. The High Court has listed the matter for further hearing on January 7, 2026.
Vikas Dubey had been gunned down by the Uttar Pradesh Police in an encounter in 2020. He had been the main accused in the killing of eight police personnel in Kanpur and had been shot while being brought to Kanpur from Ujjain, where he had surrendered, after allegedly attempting to flee when the police vehicle carrying him overturned, according to police.
