The Ministry of Education has announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) will be introduced as part of the curriculum in all schools from Grade 3 onwards, reaffirming its commitment to integrating future-ready education into India’s learning ecosystem.
The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L) has worked closely with CBSE, NCERT, KVS, NVS, and State Boards to design an inclusive and progressive curriculum under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF SE) 2023.
A stakeholder consultation was held on October 29, 2025, with participation from leading educational bodies and experts to chart the roadmap for curriculum design and implementation. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has already constituted an expert committee, chaired by Prof. Karthik Raman of IIT Madras, to develop the AI and CT curriculum. The initiative aims to instill an understanding of “AI for Public Good,” embedding the technology organically from the foundational stage.
Speaking at the consultation, Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, DoSE&L, has emphasised that AI education should be treated as a universal skill and aligned with “The World Around Us” learning framework. “Our job as policymakers is to define the minimum threshold and re-evaluate it based on the changing needs,” he said.
The ministry has also prioritised teacher training as a key pillar of implementation, with NISHTHA-led training modules and video-based learning resources expected to support educators. Collaboration between NCERT and CBSE through a dedicated Coordination Committee under NCF SE will ensure quality, consistency, and alignment across schools.
Prachi Pandey, Joint Secretary (I&T), has concluded by urging all stakeholders to adhere to the established timelines, with curriculum materials, handbooks, and digital resources set for completion by December 2025 and classroom rollout scheduled for the 2026–27 academic session.
