Representatives of Google appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday, July 28, in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to the promotion of illegal online betting and gambling platforms. Executives from Meta, however, did not depose, as per media reports.
The ED had initially summoned both tech companies on July 21, later extending the date to July 28 after the firms sought more time. The agency may also record the statement of Google’s designated compliance officer under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and has reportedly requested relevant documents.
As per media reports, Google has stated that it prohibits the promotion of illegal gambling ads and remains committed to platform safety. The company said it is fully cooperating with the investigation.
In 2023 alone, Google reportedly removed 247.4 million ads and suspended 2.9 million advertiser accounts in India to curb policy violations.
The ED is examining how illegal gambling and betting platforms were able to place ads on digital platforms, including social media and app stores. Celebrities, influencers, and sportspersons associated with these platforms are also likely to be questioned in the coming days.
The agency is currently investigating over a dozen such cases across India, including the Mahadev Online Book (MOB) app, and has alleged that these platforms defrauded users and laundered large sums of money.
