Delhi HC Bars Patanjali From Running Misleading Ads Against Dabur Chyawanprash

The Delhi High Court restrained Baba Ramdev’s brand Patanjali Ayurved from running allegedly disparaged advertisements against Dabur Chyawanprash. 

As per media reports, a bench of Justice Mini Pushkarna on Thursday allowed two interim injunction applications filed by Dabur against the advertisements by Patanjali Ayurved. 

“Application is allowed,” the judge said.

Dabur had moved the High Court in December 2024, alleging that Patanjali Ayurved was running advertisements downgrading its Chyawanprash product. 

Dabur, in its plea, said the advertisement falsely claimed that Patanjali’s Chyawanprash was the only genuine product. Furthermore, Dabur objected to specific references in advertisements by Patanjali calling a 40-herb Chyawanprash “ordinary” which they claim harm their reputation and mislead consumers and urged the court to immediately restrain Patanjali from continuing with these advertisements.

Ramdev was quoted as saying in the advertisement: “Jinko Ayurved aur Ved ka gyaan nahi, Charak, Sushrut, Dhanwantari aur Chyawanrishi ke parampara mein ‘original’ Chyawanprash kaise bana payenge’?”

Patanjali also allegedly claimed in its advertisement that Chyawanprash sold by other brands contains mercury and is unsafe for children.

This isn’t the first time Patanjali has been pulled up over its advertisements. In an earlier case filed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the court had closed contempt proceedings against Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna after they promised to stop making misleading claims about Patanjali products. The IMA had accused Patanjali of running a smear campaign against modern medicine and the Covid vaccination drive. At the time, the court had observed, “The entire country was being taken for a ride through such misleading advertisements,” and directed the company to stop publishing ads related to its medicines.
