FSSAI the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India in an inspection last month has found that 30 to 40 percent of restaurants on India’s delivery apps don’t have a valid license or registration. Also, government policies have been made according to which E-commerce platforms are only allowed to list restaurants that have a direct FSSAI license but most of them are ignoring the laws to quickly expand their reach.

It all started after FSSAI got complaints from people using popular apps including Swiggy, Zomato, Foodpanda, UberEats and others. 31st July was the last date for these apps to remove the non-registered food joints. Talking about this, FSSAI took a dig at the clever marketing tactics of food delivery apps. CEO Pawan Agarwal has appealed these startups to focus on improving overall food safety and hygiene rather than just attracting eaters with heavy discount offers.
It was all going fine when companies like Swiggy and Zomato only trusted stores which are serving quality food for years. The problem mainly came into existence after the cloud kitchen concept got popular and people starting selling food without caring about licenses.
This is a very serious issue considering that food is something that can’t be ignored for living a quality life. It becomes the responsibility of everyone to spread this message because, if 30-40% of all listed restaurants don’t have FSSAI certificates, it does raise questions over what authorities are doing to keep us healthy. So, next time you order a cheap meal from these apps, check the restaurant’s food quality at least once.
