YouTube has officially introduced Premium Lite in India at Rs 89 per month, marking the platform’s first attempt at a budget-friendly, ad-free subscription tier in the country. The launch, described by the company as a pilot project, is intended to test the market and gauge user interest in a lighter version of the full Premium service.
The new plan allows users to watch most videos across devices, including smartphones, laptops, and smart TVs, without the interruption of advertisements. However, unlike the standard YouTube Premium subscription, Premium Lite does not include access to YouTube Music Premium. Subscribers also cannot download videos for offline viewing, nor can they play content in the background while using other apps. Some ads may still appear in YouTube Shorts and music content.
YouTube’s decision to introduce this tier comes amid rising demand for affordable digital services in India, where mobile internet usage and online video consumption continue to grow rapidly. The pilot nature of the program suggests that YouTube is testing the response of Indian viewers before potentially expanding Premium Lite’s availability more broadly or adjusting its features and pricing.
Globally, YouTube has rolled out similar Premium Lite subscriptions in select countries, including the United States, Germany, and Australia, targeting users who primarily want an ad-free video experience without paying for additional features. By introducing this plan in India, the company aims to broaden its paid subscriber base while offering a more accessible alternative to the full Premium plan, which includes music streaming, offline downloads, and background play.
The launch of Premium Lite in India also reflects YouTube’s ongoing strategy to diversify its subscription offerings, catering to users with different viewing habits and budget preferences. With over 125 million subscribers worldwide across YouTube Premium and YouTube Music, the company is leveraging this pilot project to understand the preferences of Indian users and fine-tune its approach to the country’s rapidly evolving digital market.
Users interested in subscribing to YouTube Premium Lite can do so via the official YouTube app or website, with the plan automatically renewing on a monthly basis.
