Wikipedia has banned the use of AI-generated text for writing or rewriting articles on its English-language platform. This policy shift is introduced to address the growing concerns over accuracy and credibility.
Reports suggest that this move comes after months of rising instances of AI-generated content, with editors citing violations of core policies such as verifiability and reliability. A community vote reportedly passed overwhelmingly in favour of the change, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to human-led knowledge creation.
Under the updated guidelines, the use of large language models (LLMs) to generate or substantially rewrite article content is now prohibited. However, the platform permits limited use of AI tools for basic copyediting and translation, provided no new content is introduced without human verification.
As per media reports, the policy update follows ongoing efforts by Wikipedia’s editor community, including initiatives like WikiProject AI Cleanup, aimed at identifying and removing low-quality or misleading AI-generated entries.
