While entrepreneurship is something that one learns with experience or as the saying goes, it is in one’s genes, recent reports have found that, that attending IIT is also an important route to becoming a billion-dollar entrepreneur. According to reports, 73 unicorns in the country have founders from seven of the 23 IITs in India.
IIT-Delhi leads with 21 unicorns, with at least one of its founders from the institute in the capital. IIT-Bombay follows with 16 unicorns, IIT Kanpur with 12, IIT Kharagpur with 8. IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati are the other three IITs, with 7, 6 and 3 unicorns respectively.
IIT-Delhi
Leading with a record number of 21 unicorn with founders from this premier institute, is IIT-Delhi. Flipkart, Cardekho, BharatPe, Shopclues, Quikr, Udaan, Zomato and Meesho are the million-dollar ideas of people who were students at this institute.
IIT-Bombay
Ola Cabs, Groww, Delhivery, Simplilearn, Teachmint, Upwork, Vedantu and NoBroker are all found by people who attended IIT-Bombay.
IIT-Kanpur
Ixigo, InMobi, Urban Company, Myntra, Infosys and Inphi are found by IIT-Kanpur alumni.
IIT-Kharagpur
Udaan, Mindtree, Sumo Logic, Swiggy, DeHaat, InShorts and Pubmatic are unicorns found by students who attended IIT-Kharagpur.
IIT-Madras
IIT-Madras has given the country valuable unicorns like MindTree, Infosys, Zenoti, YugaByte and HealthTap.
IIT-Roorkee
Roorkee’s branch of IIT has given the country some amazing unicorns and brands like RazorPay, Dunzo, WakeFit, FamPay, Housing, InMobi, Classplus and Vedantu.
IIT-Guwahati
Unicorns like Cult.fit, Clear, Tipalti, MyGate, MindTickle, FlyHomes are from IIT-Guwahati.
While IIT is definitely one institute that has given the Indian entrepreneurial sector a major boost, non-IITians too are running successful startups that have entered the unicorn club.
