YouGov has recently launched the list of the most popular sports events of 2021 that created a lot of buzz on social media throughout the year.
The Indian Premier League tops YouGov’s 2022 Sports Buzz Rankings in India for the second year in succession with a Buzz score of 50.8.
YouGov SportsIndex measures the public’s perception of sports brands on a daily basis across a range of metrics. The rankings in YouGov’s 2022 Buzz Report are based on the Buzz scores, which measures whether respondents have heard something positive or negative about a brand recently.
1. Indian Premier League
Buzz Score: 50.8
IPL is one of the most popular sports events in the country. For years, the tournament has been creating a buzz like no other. From the day of the announcement of the show to its finals, Indians just cannot get enough of it.
2. Olympic Games Summer
Buzz Score: 49.2
India performed incredibly well in the Tokyo Olympic 2020. Indian athletes bagged a total of 7 medals with one gold by Neeraj Chopra which made us all proud and elated. The sport has scored just a few points below the IPL, becoming the second most talked about game in the country.
3. ICC Cricket World Cup
Buzz Score: 45.9
Though India did not qualify for the finals in ICC Cricket world cup 2021, it did manage to take up third place on the buzziest games list.
4. Fifa World Cup
Buzz Score: 28.3
The one sports tournament that is watched and followed the most after cricket in India is the Fifa World Cup. In 2021, the event became the 4th most popular with a buzz score of 28.3.
5. Indian Super League
Buzz Score: 20.4
The Indian Super League is a men’s professional football league, which is one of two co-existing top-tier leagues in the Indian football system along with the I League.
6. Wimbledon Championship
Buzz Score: 18
The oldest tennis tournament in the world and also the most prestigious, Wimbledon Championship, was the sixth most popular sports event in India.
7. Pro Kabaddi League
Buzz Score: 17.9
As per YouGov, the Pro Kabaddi League recorded a drop of three places to seventh compared to last year’s rankings the score of which was 23.1.
8. Asian Games
Buzz Score: 15.3
Asian Games, a biennial regional multi-sport event made the list with a score of 15.3.
9. World Wrestling Entertainment
Buzz Score: 13.3
Once one of the most popular sports events in the country, WWE received 13.3 in the buzz score list putting it in ninth place.
10. Australian Open
Buzz Score: 13
The Australian Open is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. The sports event was in 10th place on YouGov’s list.
