Reliance Industries has appointed Jeyandran Venugopal from Flipkart as the president and chief executive officer of Reliance Retail Ventures (RRVL), the holding company for the conglomerate’s retail business. The company has created this as a new role.
As per media reports, an internal note sent by Isha Ambani, who spearheads the retail and consumer business of Reliance, has said that Venugopal will work closely with her and the leadership team of Reliance Retail under the guidance of Mukesh Ambani and Manoj Modi to strengthen the retail portfolio, accelerate omni-channel growth, and drive technical and operational excellence.
Veteran group executive V Subramaniam has remained the managing director of RRVL. RRVL has housed the front-end entity Reliance Retail Ltd and till November has also included the group’s FMCG business under Reliance Consumer Products (RCPL), which has been spun off as a direct subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd from December 1.
Venugopal has recently served as the chief product and technology officer at Flipkart, leading teams across product engineering, design, data science, IT, security and infrastructure. He has played a pivotal role in driving Flipkart’s growth, customer engagement, ecosystem expansion and strengthening leadership in the Indian ecommerce landscape.
He has previously served as chief product and technology officer at Myntra and Jabong and has held senior positions at Yahoo and Amazon Web Services. He has held dual master’s degrees in computer science and mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy.
The appointment has come at a time when Reliance has been focussing more on ecommerce across B2C and B2B segments while expanding its omni-commerce ecosystem. Reliance Retail has been competing in the ecommerce sector against Amazon, Flipkart and quick commerce firms such as Swiggy Instamart and Blinkit.
