Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check Unit (FCU) has issued over 2,900 fact checks to counter misinformation related to the Government of India, according to information submitted in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, L. Murugan in response to an unstarred question of V. K. Sreekandan.
Operating under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the FCU identifies and verifies fake news, including deepfakes, AI-generated content, misleading videos, notifications, letters, and websites. It then publishes verified information across its official social media platforms to ensure accurate public communication.
So far, the unit has published 2,913 fact checks across platforms such as X, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, Threads, and WhatsApp, while also encouraging citizens to report suspicious content for verification.
During Operation Sindoor, the FCU actively tracked and countered misinformation and hostile narratives circulating online. It also supported government action in blocking over 1,400 URLs linked to misleading or anti-India content. The government further noted that digital news publishers and online content platforms are governed under the IT Rules, 2021, which establish a three-tier grievance redressal mechanism and a Code of Ethics for compliance.
